SERV was established in 2017 with the sole mission to “simplify vehicle ownership” by providing vehicle owners with a one-stop platform that allows them to truly own their vehicles, search for various services, make payments, and track their vehicle health report in the digital space. In the beginning, SERV started with an on-demand feature that provides door-to-door car maintenance service but soon introduced Drive-In during the pandemic, a new feature on the app that allows workshop merchants to get connected with customers via SERV app. Currently, SERV is actively operating in Malaysia while they’re expanding their presence in the US. SERV is also in the works of developing mobility-related technologies such as autonomous vehicles through our R&D arm within the SERV group of companies.
Business owners struggling with COVID-19 - after the pandemic struck, many local businesses were forced to close due to the inability to cope with the MCO and the strict SOP’s that have been put in place. Lack of proper record keeping - from vehicle records to invoices, most of the documentation is done in the paper which takes up storage and may endanger workshop owners during this crucial time of going contactless. Unable to reach a wider network - Many local workshops’ survival depends on a list of loyal customers that they have slowly accumulated in their time. However, with the ever-increasing number of workshops, they would need to reach a wider customer base in order to thrive.
In order to simplify the process of vehicle ownership, SERV created an app that provides users with a complete vehicle maintenance platform where they are able to issue multiple services on their vehicles, all in one platform. Prior to every service, users can review the services offered as well as the set prices which provides them with transparency and peace of mind.
In addition to providing services, the app stores each customer’s vehicle records for their future maintenance. This allows users to be reminded of their upcoming services and to monitor their vehicle’s current health status.
SERV has developed a Workshop Management System dashboard that allows workshops to take their daily operations online and operate in a contactless environment. This system also allows workshops to issue invoices as well as receive payments digitally which isn’t only convenient but also keeps them and their customers safe.
Currently, the SERV app offers two service options for our users; Service On-The-Go and Drive-in.
Currently, the SERV app offers two service options for our users; Service On-The-Go and Drive-in. Service On-The-Go provides our users with the option to book a service at their convenience where we connect our users with mechanics who can complete services at our user’s preferred time and location. Our latest feature, Drive-In, allows users to search for the closest workshop in exchange for the customer's preferred time of arrival. By maintaining the on-demand car maintenance service, SERV expands to serve the aftermarket businesses that were affected due to the global pandemic.
For our workshop partners, we offer the Workshop Management System that allows workshops to monitor their daily operations such as transactions, customer databases, and more on their business’ dashboard. Besides promoting a paperless workspace, we also encourage workshops to go contactless as we offer digital invoicing and online payment options for theirs as well as their customer’s safety during this pandemic.
Since the beginning, SERV built a valuable brand through its achievements. In recognition of our achievements, SERV has been awarded a plethora of awards including a spot on the Top 40 Innovative Startups and Creativity Prize at ASEAN-ROK Startup EXPO, ComeUp 2019, as well as being granted with the Winner and Judges Choice at Teraju SUPERB 2019. With this, the total income has accumulated to MYR 2.4M since 2018 which allows SERV to grow its YoY growth to 3x.
Following the recognition via word of mouth and marketing at a small cost, SERV has grown from just around 5-6% active users to now more than 70%, which makes our current number of users registered to have exceeded more than 11,000.
For our SERV app, our customers are young vehicle owners who aim to better understand and take care of their vehicle without the hassle of a complicated process. These vehicle owners live busy lives with no room in their daily routine to set aside the time for a car service. However, for our Workshop Management System, our customers are automotive-related businesses that require a platform where they can systematically operate their business or a place for them to reach a wider range of customers.
Although we believe that adding value to vehicle ownership is crucial, we must ensure that the business is able to sustain said values to our users. One of the first business models is Service On-The-Go which earns us between 5 to 15% of revenue sharing. We gain 15% from our mobile workshop providers who fully rely on the SERV app and 5 to 10% from the direct integration with other providers, such as Bateriku.com and MyAssist roadside assistance.
Another business model is our latest Drive-In feature where we collaborate with workshop partners to encourage a digital transformation within their daily operations by creating a platform known as our Workshop Management System. The platform we provide is currently free to use. However, SERV earns 2% from each transaction made on the provided payment channels on the SERV app. Lastly, we also depend on the deals made with certain local manufacturers that require custom solutions and feature integration within their system. This involves certain software customizations and automation to be developed by our engineers.
In the present day, the Malaysian automotive industry is the third-largest in Southeast Asia, and the 23rd largest in the world, with an annual production output of over 500,000 vehicles. Malaysia’s Manufacturing sales in August 2020 stood at RM118.5 billion, grew 1.7 percent as compared to the previous year. The rise in sales value in August 2020 was driven by the increase in Transport Equipment & Other Manufactures Products (16.2%).
On the user's end, there are 31.2 million units of motor vehicles registered in Malaysia as of December 31 last year, and it consists of cars, commercial vehicles, and motorcycles. The latest data also provides the necessary to determine the overall increase in vehicles in Malaysia over the past 10 years – in 2010, vehicle registrations in the country were recorded at 20.18 million units, and so the latest figure translates to just over 11 million new registrations in the 2010-2019 period or an average of 1.1 million units per year for the decade.
By monitoring global market trends in the automotive sector, you will find that there are emerging solutions that are being implemented in developing countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines. However, in Malaysia, we already have on-demand vehicle services such as Bateriku and MyAssist roadside assistance. SERV acts as the all-in-one vehicle services to complete vehicle ownership experience.
We aim to raise RM2m of funds within the next 12-18 months to achieve our next goal. Within the coming year, these funds will be utilized as follows:
In 2018, SERV managed to successfully obtain funding from the Cradle CIP300 grant. Additionally, we’ve also received further funding from TERAJU SUPERB amounting to RM500k in 2019. These generous funds from our investors allowed us to better market our products to both users and merchants which helped us severely increase our numbers within the past 2 years.
